parts of the project

At first glance, this project seemed fairly simple and self-explanatory.  After throwing around different ideas for the design and placement of the word, I realized that there was more to this project than what originally met the eye.   Our group had difficulties at first with coming up with a look for the word.  We wanted to depict “contrast” as best as we could, but were struggling with what form of contrast we wanted to depict (contrast within the word as a whole, contrast within the individual letters, contrast with the size of the letters, etc.) We ended up doing a mix of everything.  We had half of the word painted black with a white outline, the other half painted white with a black outline, and the T in the middle was half white, half black, and much larger than the rest of the word.  We then placed the word in Allen Fieldhouse, half of it behind a glass window and the other in front of the window.  I learned that when depicting something through design, you have to come at it from all angles in order to fully get across what you’re trying to depict.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The point of this project was to display our group’s word in real life using 3-foot tall letters, and to depict the overall meaning of the word in the design of the letters.  We were put into groups of 4 and given a word.  Next, we learned the definition and came up with design, font, size and placement of the word on campus. We then built our 3-D letters out of cardboard, painted them, and placed them in our desired spot.

PROJECT REFLECTION:

Overall, I really enjoyed this project.  It was definitely a lot different from the first two projects simply because this was graphics based, whereas the first two were industrial based.  I learned a lot about building off of all of my ideas and expanding them in every way possible instead of just staying inside the box.  The hardest part, for me, was finding my creativity because a lot of the time when I would be working on the squares I wouldn’t be inspired and I wouldn’t have very good results.  This project really opened my eyes to what I will have to do in projects in the future.

PARTS OF THE LETTER REFLECTION

Typography can be defined as the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible.  The presentation starts off by talking about the start of typography, which evolved from handwriting.  Differences in typography are based on stroke sizes and added extras like serifs, brackets, and apexes.
